New Online Writers on Writing

I’ve been freelance writing online for years and I’ve learned a little bit about a lot of things. One of my favorite topics to get paid writing about is on the subject of earning money with your writing. I started doing this early in my writing career and I continue to do it.

Many new writers just starting out online tend to do this. I found that it serves as a way to impress the writing tips and strategies in my own mind. At the same time, I’m conveying helpful information to the reader, usually another new writer. This can be a good way for writers to inform and inspire one another, as is the case at writing websites like Hubpages, Yahoo Contributor Network, Constant Content and Bukisa. These are awesome sites for writers to earn money at and they each have unique writing communities. If you haven’t already done so, make a point to visit the different writing forums for the sites you normally write for. Introduce yourself and spend a little time reading what’s on the minds of other writers. You will be surprised at how much you can learn just on one visit.

Your Referral Activities

If you’re truly ready to start increasing your writing income, start giving some thought to your referral activities. Maybe you have a website or write a blog, but you don’t provide referral links like you should. As a writer, there are probably tons of tools and resources you use, but you take their referral programs for granted . You can ask yourself thought provoking questions, in order to determine the best resources to refer other writers to.  Feel free to start with these:

  • What websites do I write for and why?
  • Does the site have a referral compensation program?
  • If so, am I signed up for the program?
  • Do I have a current, updated list of all my referral ID’s?
  • Where and how often do I use my referral ID’s?
  • Do I currently monitor the stats and results of my referral income?
  • Do I notice patterns and trends in my referrals and referral income?
  • Can I adjust or improve my efforts, to increase my referral income?

Taking steps to find out about referral compensation programs can really benefit you, especially in the long run. I currently earn between $15 and $18 a month from referral income at just one site. The writers that joined Constant Content via one of my referral links have continued to earn money, thus making me a small profit. Keep in mind, this is just from one writing site. There are tons of creative ideas you can use to help you gain referral income. I discuss this topic in my eBook: Finally Paid to Write - The Beginner's Guide to Writing for Pay. You can visit my website and learn more about the ebook. I created the Finally Paid to Write website to compliment the information contained in the eBook. I think new writers will find it extremely helpful.

Good hub! I like the idea of income through referrals. Thanks, you have made some good points. We gotta get the word out.

I do include my own referral links from time to time on my hubs, but I'm a little lackadaisical about adding them. I have used them a lot on other websites and have had quite a few referrals come in. Like you, I've used the PayPal referral link which has generated a lot of referrals for me (and a little bit of money -- that's always good). I need to go back in and edit my hubs to contain the referral link to sign up for Hubpages and get that off my to-do list. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks for the kudos guys. Lets not overlook the point of referring other Hubbers by using the "link to this hub" button at the bottom. Just think - what if all your hubs that you provide references in actually contained references to other Hubbers and you used your referral links? The extra earning potential could be awesome! I currently have over 200 articles published at YCN - and about 75% of them cite other articles as reference. I only wish I had used more Hub referrals, but who knew???
